应中日韩水利学会2007年年会组办方邀请,我校王志坚教授于2007.7.25-7.28参加了在日本召开的主题为水信息的国际论坛,参加会议的有中、日、韩三国代表,中方派出代表三人,分别来自北京水科院、南科院和河海大学。
王志坚教授代表中方在论坛上做了题为“Wireless Sensor Networks: From Terrestrial to Underwater”主题报告,引起与会者的强烈反响。该主题报告的主要内容包括:
1、What is a WSN?
(1)“Many-tiny-cheap” vision:Wireless network of many inexpensive; embedded devices, capable of sensing, communication and actuation.
(2)Interface to the physical world:Monitor “physical-phenomena” upclose;Allow Remote Sensing;Legacy sensor networks: wired => cumbersome!
(3)Cheap and energy efficient:Cheap: High density, self-configuring network;Energy Efficient: Observe long term trends;Inherently collaborative & distributed
2、Applications / Real World Deployments
Military Affairs;Sensor attached to every vehicle;Real World Deployments: Research、Commercial;
3、Terrestrial WSN: The Challenges
Prime Design Constraint;Big shift from Internet;Different from cellular network;Different from MANETS;Opportunity for computer network research,But, the best thing about WSN is that it is multidisciplinary, i.e. it is not just about reseach in computer networks……
4、The new Frontier: Underwater Sensor Networks
Vision: Real-time visualization of underwater phenomena.
Goal:Port existing sensor-net tools/research to underwater environment;Develop research infrastructure for underwater sensor-nets.
Some Applications:Pollution monitoring;Fish or micro-organism tracking;Underwater Oil,well completion;Undersea, earthquake study;Undersea,surveillance;Coral reef observatory;AND more…..
5、Conclusions
(1)A very exciting future!
(2)Terrestrial sensor nets:Silver lining: WSN are not one-size-fit-all
(3)New directions might come up with different applications.
(4)Behavior of wireless channel in short hop, high density environment (interference, link quality,…)
(5)More work on actuation, data mules (synergy robotics and WSN)
(6)Acoustic Underwater Sensor Networks:Constraint �C latency!
